Process Pipe Fabrication is What We Do

There is a question that’s asked of me every time I contact a new prospective customer for our services. “What do you do?”

That’s pretty simple to explain, we specialize in the fabrication of process pipe for the petrochemical, power, compression, refining, and terminal industries. We only work with heavy industrial contractors and EPC construction companies. So, we won’t be a competitor of yours sometime down the road.

We WERE a construction company until 4 1/2 years ago. We made a business decision to no longer support construction. We made the choice to keep our fabrication shop, converting it to a production pipe fabrication facility. Further, we decided we would support other construction companies as our target market.

Every construction company “can” fabricate their own pipe, either in there shop or in the field. However, every shop I’ve visited are set up as “job shops” to fabricated whatever the field needs. They’re fabricating pipe on pipe stands, welding in position, just like they would in the field.

Our shop can out produce and out perform this mode of fabrication simply by the processes we’ve engineered into our facility and the roll out equipment we use to support our welding.

With that said, our welding time can greatly decrease the time it takes to support the field crews on sight.

We don’t want to and are not asking you to shut your shop down, we’re asking you to give us an opportunity to show you how we can assist you in the success of your field construction projects. There are times that your shop will be utilized for critical, fast turn around aspects of just about every project you have. We help in the area’s that production rates can save money and time.

There are few things that slow our deliveries down. Weather being the most frustrating reason. We give our customers our word that we will do everything in our power to never allow anything to get in the way of delivering you your fabricated pipe on time and at the agreed upon amount. Working as a Team

I know, I’m always talking about “attitude”. It’s that important.

We had a very refreshing meeting with one of our customers this morning. Everything works out well when respect is shown by everyone. Team has no “I’s” in it.

Great meeting.

Attitude plays such a vital role in business. Building one another up, working with people who help bring the best out in everyone around them. That’s what makes business so exciting and fulfilling.

We’re cutting pipe, cleaning fittings, cleaning the ends of that pipe, getting it into the shop for the fitters to get to work. We’re pushing the fitters a bit hard this week to load up the welders so everyone can be a productive as possible.

The attitude in the shop is pretty high at this time. The guys are all excited we have work lined up and materials on the yard for the next weeks. With prospects being discussed daily.

This year isn’t starting out quite how we anticipated. I believe a lot of that has to do with the crap the media is spewing out about government. That kind of talk hurts every business as well as hurt individuals make a living to support their families.

Once you say something that smears a mans reputation, those words never go away, not ever.

All a man has is his reputation. Everything he has is wrapped up in his reputation. His wife and children know his reputation. His neighbors, co workers, organization members, people in the community know him by his reputation. Once you damage that view of a man, it’s almost never possible to overcome it. Someone, anyone can say someone said or did something and no matter how much he defends himself, the stigma is still set in doubt about him.

That’s a shame, really. The one who says these “bad things” about a man usually doesn’t suffer for what he’s done. I believe that what goes around comes around, however, it never repairs the damage that has been done.

Pipe fabrication is a really volatile business to be in. Everyone and their brother thinks anyone can weld pipe. NOT!

It takes a lot to get it done right. It takes a special kind of man to get everything running on the right track from the beginning. If a project doesn’t start out correctly, with in a process, it’s doomed to fail. We take pride in getting it started correctly from day one! Then keeping control of it no matter what takes place during day one or any other day after that. Project Management is such a vital and key role to a successful projects completion.

The Project Manager never gets the at a boys he deserves, usually because before the last project is over the next one is already starting. He just moves onto the next project and finishes the last one at the same time. Not many people can do that effectively. They are hard to come by, training someone to be able to do that is tough. The Project Manager has to have what it takes within himself, before teaching can be effective.

I have high regard and respect for the Project Manager on any project. He deserves it. So the end of this post is to say thank you to Project Managers, and to say thank you for our Project Manager, Jeff Aucoin.

I hope my philosophical rants are being understood. They are to help make me a better person as well as help others to “think”. We tend to not think much about the most important things in life. We seem to “react” to everything.

Process Pipe Manufacturing Facility

We are working on 3 jobs in the shop, 2 different customers, 3 locations for delivery.

We strive to be the best at what we do. Sometimes that’s easy and sometimes it’s not. The times that it’s not easy, is when outsiders come in and want to change the way we do things. They come in and decide they need to change the proven processes we’ve established to produce high quality custom pipe for the plants we’re shipping to.

For the life of me I just can’t understand why some people, who don’t have a stake in what we do, make decisions that effect our business.

We make our living to; feed our families, send our children to school, support our local community business’s, make car payments, make payroll, buy insurance, buy clothes, and everything else that goes with building an upstanding family to carry on the moral, ethical, spiritual, and financial responsibilities we’ve set in action.

“We made the choice” is the hyperlink you touched to get to this blog post. That phrase isn’t just 4 words that don’t mean anything. They didn’t just fall out of the sky, or get pulled out of thin air. They were carefully chosen, for a purpose, to be on our Home Page.

These 4 words explain a lot about who we are and why we do what we do. We made a choice to no longer work for employers who treat their staff with disrespect. We made the choice to no longer work with an employer who treats “our” customers with disrespect. ( I said “our” customers because we take your business personally, we take ownership in the jobs we manage.) We made the choice to mortgage our homes, not take a paycheck this week or month, sell the boat and motorcycle to make payroll. We made the choice to hire each and everyone that works here, for a reason and a purpose. We make the choice, most of the time, as to who we work for and with, for a reason and a purpose. That’s why we’re in business for ourselves. That’s why we walked away from all the dumb shit that some business owners do.

We made the choice to work with “people” who want to work with us. People who make it a joy to come to work every morning. People we know appreciate the long hours we spend to get their job done correctly, on time and within the budget we proposed. People who have respect for themselves. People who respect us and the expertise we have in our field of business. People who encourage us, teach us, learn with us, motivate us, and push us intellectually to improve our selves personally. People who made the choice to do and be where they are because they like/love what they do. People who take pride in the job they do. People who take pride in the relationships they build along the way.

If you notice, I use the word “people” quite often. There’s a reason and a purpose for that too. It’s because business is about giving people what they want at a price and time that they want or need it. People are the key! People are what we are. People either help us achieve one another’s goals or they don’t. We work hard at working with people who want to be successful as often as is possible. We choose to NOT work with people who do everything in their power to interfere with our reaching our goals. There is a reason and a purpose to that as well.

Respect for others is rapidly being destroyed by attitudes, lack of morals and stupidity.

With all that said. We still enjoy coming to work every day to do a great job of manufacturing process pipe for your projects. We are team players to get you what you need and when you need it.

We also know the stressful situations some of your customers place you in, on purpose, because they can. We’re here to fight that fight with you. Why you might ask? Because it’s the right thing to do and it’s the only way to get the stupid ones out of all our business. One of the reasons business, society, families, schools, governments and all organizations are the way they are is because no one, not one of us thought it was important enough to fight it a long time ago. We have all been to busy making a living, and helping one another get to where we all want to be. Now is the time to put up or shut up. Which way will we go as an individual in this thing we call business.

Work is Being Awarded, Proposals Going Out

We’re doing well at this moment in time and space. However, we all know that business is fluid. It’s like riding a wave at the beach. You ride it as long as you can, then it fizzles out and you’re starting all over again. Part of what we do is work hard to be able to zip on over to the next wave before that old one fizzles out. Hop on it and ride some more, then do it for the next wave and that cycle goes on until there isn’t another wave to jump to. That’s life, it’s a pattern that seems to be as old as people on the earth.

So, why fight it? Why get frustrated by this pattern? Why take out our frustrations on our existing customers and co-workers, or family and friends? Why does it bother us so much when we’re finished riding one wave and looking for the next wave to jump on? Why does that make us nervous? Even makes some loose all there sense! What’s up with that?

Maybe this is the time to talk about “pipelines”, not the kind they’re protesting about that runs all across our country, supplying our energy needs. But the kind that we build so we have the next wave in sight even as the one we’re riding is just starting. The time to prepare for the next job is before we are awarded the one we’re about to be awarded. That’s the PIPELINE I’m talking about. Just as liquids and gases flow through an energy pipeline, so must our “product” continue to flow in our pipeline of prospective work so we can continue in a steady business venture.

Lots of business owners wait until they have no “product” in their pipeline to worry, or put forth the effort to get more “product”. That makes for a very volatile work environment for our co-workers as well as our prospective customers. Why, you might ask? Because of our “ATTITUDE”, it changes from what it was while we have product in our facility to something akin to a beast when we see the darkness at the end of the tunnel or pipeline. This attitude change can be avoided most of the time if we’re smart about our business.

One of the greatest ways to keep our business and personal attitudes right is to encourage one another, support one another, be loyal to one another, be considerate of one another and I guess that list could continue to grow if I had more time to write. When everything is going fine, we’re producing as much product as we can, everything attitude based seems to take care of itself. Once the “product” end is in sight, attitudes or emotions seem to get brought into the equation.  Sometimes that’s not a bad thing, however, there are times that the BLAME game begins. It’s all “your” fault we don’t have work! It’s all every one else’s fault when our pipeline dries up. But is it everyone else’s fault? Or should we look in the mirror and take responsibility for which wave we jump onto next? It should be!

I say that without making a distinction between owner, project manager, shipping and receiving, controller, purchasing manager, salesman, receptionist, or the guys that make the money for our company. Because it’s all our responsibility to keep our pipeline filled to the brim with prospective work and real work. If we all do our jobs, yes IF we would all do our jobs, this pipeline would be so much easier to keep filled. Why? Because, of the list I mentioned before. If we are loyal, we’d care about what occurs within our company. If we were encouraging one another we’d care about what occurs within our company. If we were supporting one another all along, we’d show how much we care about our business. I know, it’s only my job. Well, that’s the attitude that hurts a business. You can walk away from a job, however, the business owner can’t. You can tell off the customer, but the owner can’t. You can be insubordinate, and the owner can’t. See there is a part of business that most of those who think that they have a “job”, don’t stop to think about. Someone has to make all the decisions to make payroll so you get paid for your “job”.

Society, schools, and even parents don’t teach us most of the things we need to know about working in the real world. Parents are too busy trying to make a living so you can have a decent life. Teachers are too busy trying to keep discipline in the classroom and teaching all kinds of “stuff” that shouldn’t even be in the curriculum, because it’s just stupid. Society doesn’t teach what’s truly important because they were never taught in their schools or by their parents either. But everyone is “busy”, agreed, busy being busy. That doesn’t improve society, the schools, the family or the work place and it sure doesn’t make any money.

In the real world, there are absolutes, in the fantasy world that we live in there are NO absolutes. Everyone can get a trophy because they played the game. Everyone can earn big bucks because they “worked”. NOT IN THE REAL WORLD! It just doesn’t work that way no matter how many times or ways you may teach it. It just doesn’t work that way!

There is an absolute that we all need to remember, nurture, captivate, increase, grow, protect, and cherish. That absolute is we need one another. Employee, Boss, Customer, Sales clerk, bus driver, equipment salesman, helper, fitter and welder. We all need one another. We are not supposed to be “adversaries”! We are supposed to be respectful and truthful with one another. We all get paid for what we do, if we did it better we would never have to ask for a raise. If we did our jobs with self respect, self discipline, and the right ATTITUDE the raises would come automatically. When you reach top, the next stage in your attitude and career should be where can I move UP. Is it here? Or is it somewhere else? How do I get there? Can I get there where I already am? There is no simple or one size fits all answer to these questions. We have to take the time to train/teach ourselves how to make these decisions and how to go about moving UP in this world.

As we’re thinking about this, remember, we really do need one another. We can benefit by helping one another get to where we want to go if we help others get to where they want to be.

Customers can get what they need by working WITH those that are doing their best to get them what they need and when they need it. Employee’s can get what they want if they just help their employer get to where they want and need to be. Then and only then can you get to where you want and need to be.

I know, this was supposed to be all about new work coming in. Well it is, if you think about it. I can post pictures of the pipe we’re manufacturing. One problem, each picture I post looks just like the last one I posted. With that said, I’m going to post a few pictures I took yesterday of the yard and the shop. We’re getting busy, working hard to fill our “pipeline” and could use all your help in getting there so we can help you get to where you want and need to be.

Manufacturing Vs Fabrication of Process Pipe

I’d like to take a moment to share a couple of ideas and explanations about what we do and why we do it the way we do, as well as how we do it.

Let’s start at the beginning. Just as any company has a process and procedure for doing business, so do we. Each and every detail and aspect of these policies are there for a very specific purpose. Some are for the protection of the customer, some are for the protection of the employee’s and our company. With that said, some are specifically based on making our company productive and profitable. Without profit, none of us can earn a living. Our services depend on our company making a profit, just as every other company in the world, no matter what service they offer. That’s just life in the real world.

This is meant for those who buy commodities without having a deeper understanding of what they are purchasing, how it’s used in their project, or how it’s installed. This isn’t a “commodity” item, never was, and never will be. Why? Because each piece, spool, section are all “custom” made to our customers standards, specification, codes and design. When a company wants prices by the “unit” we know they don’t really have a grasp on what they’re asking. My own personal opinion is that they are leaving themselves wide open for all kinds of interpretations. When a company tells me they don’t care about what diameter or wall thickness the pipe is they want a price and delivery, and they want it quickly. We tend to walk away from these. Why? I would hope you can figure that out.

What we do is not rocket science, but it does take a lot of knowledge, intelligence, patience, endurance, empathy, compassion, will power, self-control, patience, communication skills, risk taking and did I mention patience? What we do may not be rocket science, but it does use the same mathematics, physics, human dedication, mental capacity, planning, forethought, dedication, quality control procedure, as being a rocket scientist, if not more. states the following:

Manufacture – the making of goods and wares by manual labor or machinery, especially on a large scale.

That’s what we do! We manufacture a product, process pipe by using manual labor and machinery. So by the very definition of our products we run a manufacturing facility.

We manufacture approximately 55,000 welds a year. Every day we manufacture welded process pipe. That’s our area of expertise.

Just because we don’t have conveyor belts moving raw materials around doesn’t mean we don’t move them. We don’t use robotics. Why? Because our skilled craftsman can out perform robots hands down. In the time it takes someone to put the pieces in the machine or in place so the machine can get started, our process is complete and the pipe spool is on the ground ready for it’s next step in our process. We don’t use automatic welding machines either. Why not? For basically the same reason, our team of expert welders and fitters are faster than the machines are.

We have been manufacturing process pipe for many years and have found the safest, most productive, most competitively priced, highest quality means to do so. That “way” is how we derived our process. A Production Manufacturing Facility is what we operate. We’re not a “job shop”, we only manufacture process pipe. There is nothing wrong with a “job shop”, nothing at all. We’re just not one, pure and simple. They chose to fabricate items they have expertise in. Today they might be fabricating a tank, tomorrow a piece of pipe, the next day a structural steel component, and next week, it all starts over again.

A Production Manufacturing Facility is different. We specialize in the manufacturing of process pipe made from carbon steel, stainless steel, low temp carbon steel and chrome. We are manufacturing process pipe today, we did the same yesterday and will be doing it Monday morning and every other day of the week. We’ve manufactured process pipe for Enterprise Products, Air Products, Oneok, Targa Resources, TransCanada, Columbia Gas, Kinder Morgan, Vaalco, McMoRan, Formosa Plastics, El Paso, Apache Corp, Stone Energy, Calumet Refinery, Placid Refinery, Sunoco, LBC, and this list could go on for a long while. That’s what we do. For us it’s easy, fulfilling, and dare I say it, exciting. When we follow our proven processes and procedures. That’s part of what separates us from the others that say they are pipe fabricators. A lot of them are still doing it the way it’s been done for decades. There are some that believe technology is the answer. And to a degree they have a point, but technology isn’t a product and can’t be used to manufacture as such. It’s not what makes pipe. People make pipe. Technology is what type of welding wire we use for this type of project and the materials it’s made of. Technology is what we use to communicate with one another.

Each and every piece we put together is customized. It’s very rare to find two pieces that are the same on any project. That’s what makes our process so unique. We have set procedures to take care of that, as well as all other issues that might come about during a project.

We all know this is construction, things are going to take place and change, it always does. How we deal with those issues can set us apart. With that said, we all have to be smarter, wiser, more knowledgeable and more creative than the other guys. Whoever the other guys are. Don’t get me wrong, from time to time, we make mistakes. There I said it. We can admit it when we do make a mistake and do what we have to in order to rectify that issue. We have never walked away from our responsibility to produce what we promised you we would. However, I can’t say others are so honest or forth coming. Some people act and speak like they aren’t capable of making a mistake. They may even hide behind a  contract or specifications or codes as they interpret them. Common sense is crucial from all sides. Engineering is critical in a lot of areas. But common sense can go a long way, sometimes even further than a degree. I am learning that we, as an industry, are loosing our ability to “discuss” a matter. Discuss, put our heads together or whatever you want to call it. We’re loosing the ability to talk to one another intelligently, in a manner that the job gets done correctly and we haven’t burned any bridges in the process.

Respect is something missing in society today. It’s demanded by most and never given by those demanding it for themselves. What’s up with that?

Most companies are in business because the owners decided they knew enough, had enough experience and scrapped up enough money and convinced others to come to work for them to do a service or supply a product. The guys that have had the sleepless nights, mortgaged their homes, drive a vehicle older than their helpers, trained their personnel, made payroll, bought insurance, made payments to the bank, borrowed money from the bank, gave up their own salaries to make that payroll and all the other things that owners do to start a business and keep it going, know how to do what they do. Respect for that should have some sway in any conversation, especially if the other person never did these things. To many time people “go to work” “do their job” with no thought about how they affect everyone around them.

Where is the respect for a business owner when people come in “bullying” that owner so they get their way?

We know that the end user of the process pipe we manufacture has spent a lot of time, energy, experience and expertise in the design of the facility this process pipe will be installed in. What we are expected to do with this pipe is demanding, critical, time saving for our customers, and above all it has to follow certain processes and procedures to be correct and of the highest quality.

We have spent years designing the “process” by which we manufacture the process pipe our customers expect and count on. We did it to offer the best manufactured process pipe anywhere.

We are the best because of the procedures and processes we designed and follow. When we’re forced to deviate from these tried and true processes, things don’t go as smoothly as they could. Why? There are many answers to this question and I’ll let you think about them for a while. Common sense will give you the answer.

We’re all here to do a job. We’re all here to help our customers get what they want and need. We’re all here to earn a living.

We manufacture process pipe because it’s what we’ve trained ourselves and team to do better than anyone else. And our history proves we know what we’re doing. Why would anyone want to come in here and change that?

We’re finishing this project as I’m writing this post. Our shop performed well, and we’re working on the next one running better. Every job is different, so adjustments must be made along the way. We’ve been discussing how we can make things run better and making some changes. All these changes are designed to make our shop more productive and concentrate on quality to an even higher standard.

We’ve learned a lot over the years we’ve been in business. One of the things we’ve learned a long time ago is that we can always do better. That’s part of what makes this business exciting. Never a dull moment.

I’ve said it before, there are only so many ways to publish pictures of the process pipe we’re manufacturing. I’m including a few more pic’s in order to make this post “look” better.

All accounted for and ready to ship. This particular pipe is heading to a location in Louisiana. Our next few jobs are going to Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia.

We’re anticipating 2017 to be a very productive year.

The professional team we have working with us is second to none, thank you all. Hard work, perseverance and dedication pays off.

2017 is Moving Forward with New Projects

We’re about finished with one project that started in January and have begun receiving materials for the next two projects starting in a week or so. That’s great news for us, for our “Partners” as well as our employee’s and local community. When we have work, everyone benefits!

If everything we’ve been told by our Partners, this year should be a great year.

In 2016 we quoted more dollars and more projects than ever before. There was work out there, just a lot more competitive than I remember. That’s boding well for 2017, now some of that work is paying off and contracts/PO’s are beginning to hit the inbox.

We appreciate the supporting role we have with our “Partners”, Construction companies, around this Great United States.

A Few Thoughts and Comments

I know I haven’t posted recently, we’ve been busy getting ready for 2017. If all goes according to the plan we’ve laid out, this should be a very busy year. We’re looking forward to working with all our “Customers” as they bring in the new work for 2017. I use the title Customers, respectfully. Truth be told, we view ourselves as “Partners” with the same goal in mind. Get the job done right for our Partners customers so they can get a “Gold Star” and get the next project awarded to them. Then we all win, from the “end user” of all our services combined to our employee’s down to all our local business community. Everyone shares in the positive relationships each of us builds. Business isn’t a selfish entity or non-human structure that just exists.  Business’s are groups of people who live, laugh, cry, hurt, enjoy, raise their children, go to school, support one another in many ways. But most of all, business is made up of your/our communities citizens.

With that said, we must always remember what we do, think and say in this community we call business affects one another. We can build a professional, sound, honest and loyal reputation by our actions and destroy or damage that reputation with just a few short words. Words can hurt anyone and usually hurt more people than we think. Just look at what’s going on in the media and what they call news. Most of what is broadcast isn’t news, it’s dribble designed to hurt anyone and everyone who isn’t of the same opinion. When we watch what’s going on in this world right now we see selfishness, greed, anger, retaliation, discontent, lashing out, disrespect, just to name a few things visible. What we as the business community can do to bring human relationships back into vogue, is to be an example of what to do and how to do it as an example to our fellow citizens. We can work with one another like human beings, no dog eat dog mentality. We can work together to bring the common goal about, helping others get what they want at a cost and price we can all afford to pay or be paid. We can work together without hurting one another and let those actions be spoken from the roof tops.

We have the power, as employers, to make this world a better place to live in. Some of the faults we see in society can be blamed on parents and teachers not doing our job as well as we all could have. However, we, the business community could do better by how we conduct ourselves doing what we do. We can show sincere appreciation to those we work with that help us to be successful, no matter what our business is. With that said, those that helped us need to learn to accept our appreciation without complaining, disrespecting, being disloyal, or sabotaging our every step forward. As the business community at large, we can stop rewarding poor, mediocre, or below standard job performance. We can help everyone around us to put forth more effort, more concern, more empathy, more understanding, into all our work lives. Work is an integral part of who we are and what kind of person we have grown to be. Business’s have reputations, a large part of that reputation is based on how our employee’s work for us or with us.

All the “blaming” going on in the media, for way to long, is non productive, and continues to divide everyone. We should all be able see that. So why would blaming others in business be any better? It can’t!

Let’s do our jobs, knowing that what each one of us does affects everyone else. That affect can either be a positive experience or a negative experience. That choice is up to each one of us.
